As we approach the end of the fiscal year, many organizations in the social purpose space find themselves in a familiar position of juggling deadlines, finalizing reports, and wrapping up projects. We are no exception. February and March, in particular, tend to be intense months as we push toward the finish line on multiple projects. While this busy season is a challenge it also offers valuable insights into how we can navigate heavier workloads while staying grounded and intentional in our work.
How do we manage? Over the years, we’ve developed a few approaches to help us move through this period with greater ease.
Plan Ahead (As Much As We Can)
We knew this season would be packed, and we prepared accordingly. During our last quarterly process reflection, we looked ahead to anticipate the additional demands this quarter would bring. Acknowledging that this time would be busy helped us mentally prepare. Though we can’t plan for every unexpected request, having a roadmap in place allows us to better manage our priorities.
Give Ourselves Permission to Let Go
Not everything has to be done right now. We’ve intentionally pressed pause on some internal projects that can wait for a slower time. We’ve also suspended non-essential team calls to free up capacity and give ourselves a bit more breathing room. In a season like this, it’s about focusing on what truly needs to get done and setting aside the rest without guilt.
Ask for Help
Our team regularly checks in on capacity so that if anyone is feeling overwhelmed, we redistribute tasks to ease the load. We also lean on our ecosystem, engaging additional collaborators to support our projects. This approach helps us get through the crunch and strengthens our broader network of partnerships.
Respect That Our Clients Are in This Busy Season Too
We’re not the only ones feeling the pressure, our clients and partners are also navigating year-end demands. Recognizing this helps us remain flexible and empathetic. Whether it’s adjusting timelines, offering quick solutions, or simply extending grace, we aim to meet others where they are. When we approach this season with an understanding that we’re all in it together, we create a more sustainable and supportive working environment.
Have Something to Look Forward To
It’s important to have a light at the end of the tunnel. For us, that’s our upcoming team retreat in May—a dedicated time to pause, reflect, and reconnect. Having something on the horizon that represents renewal keeps us motivated through the intensity of this season. It reminds us that the busyness is temporary and that a slower, more reflective time is just around the corner.
Final Thoughts
Busy seasons will always be part of our work in the social purpose space. With a little foresight, a willingness to let go of what’s unnecessary, and a strong foundation of mutual support, we can move through them with more ease and intention. As we push through these final weeks, we’re holding onto these strategies and reminding ourselves that balance is about making thoughtful choices, not just pushing harder.
To all our fellow organizations navigating this busy time, hang in there! You’re doing important work, and soon enough, a new season will unfold, bringing fresh opportunities to reflect, reset, and move forward.
